Billionaire developer John Catsimatidis Sr.’s strong personality and political aspirations — he’s run for mayor of New York City twice — have kept his name in the headlines and will for years to come.

The founder of New York-based Red Apple Real Estate and owner of Gristedes Supermarkets is developing The Residences at 400 Central.

This $400 million, 46-story condominium tower in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg will feature 301 luxury condos, 45,000 square feet of office space as well as ground-floor retail and restaurants. It is expected to be the tallest residential building along Florida’s west coast. Catsimatidis broke ground on the site in October 2021 and announced he intends to purchase a penthouse in the building.

Forbes estimates Catsimatidis has a net worth of $3.7 billion.

He has frequently discussed his deep ties to the city — his wife’s mother and stepfather moved there around 40 years ago. The extent of Catsimatidis’ local involvement in the community can only be speculated, but his track record in New York and deep-rooted interest in politics make him a person to watch in 2022.
